Sun is open sourcing Java to bring it back to the popularity charts and now its trying to deploy a strategy for making Solaris a star too. Just as Java is ubiquitous in cell phones, computers and embedded systems Sun wants to duplicate that success in case of Solaris too. Sun is not only looking forward to take Solaris to markets where it does not have much presence but even position Solaris as a' real alternative' to Linux.

The seriousness of Sun can be judged from the fact that it's planning to release OpenSolaris binaries next year in a distribution code titled Project Indiana which matches Linux distributions. It knows developers can play a major role in increasing its popularity therefore its trying to build a developer community around Solaris. With Indiana it plans to tap both developers and early adopters. In case of Solaris Sun should probably first try to target those who earlier had problems with it and getting back to campuses will surely help the cause of Solaris. I believe flexibility can help the cause of Solaris since OS is quite a competitive market to achieve success.
