Java Compatibility Testing eased by Sun
Filed in archive Programming on August 21, 2007
I remember the era when Java licensees had to literally slog to access Java compatibility tests and Sun which was known to be quite fastidious about its Java compatibility tests seems to have moved ahead from that era. We are all aware that slowly and steadily Sun seems to be moving towards the open source regime and in a recent announcement the company stated that it is ready to hand over the 'write one, run anywhere' certification with its OpenJDK Community Technology Compatibility Kit License. It is being labeled as another milestone for the Java Technology. If you are looking forward to it then you need to be part of OpenJDK.
Sun believes that Java will get a push if it is certified as compatible and JCK license terms will ensure full compliance with the GPLv2 terms and in case one clears it they will get access to Java compatible trademark and logo. At the end of the day Sun definitely stands to gain since Apache Harmony project plans of building rival Java Standard Edition have not qualified.
