The announcement for the availability of source code for NetBeans Mobility Pack and NetBeans Mobility Pack for CDC has been made by Sun Microsystems which would be released under the OSI compliant Common Development and Distribution License. Java ME development tools are known for their unique authoring features which can simplify and pace up the creation of applications for major mobile devices. Interested people can log on to http://mobility.netbeans.org/ in order to get involved in the open source project.

The NetBeans Mobility Pack quickly gained recognition as a leading mobile IDE and got thumbs up from Java ME developers and companies such as Ricoh, Sony Ericsson and Sprint. The Mobility Pack has features such as device optimization and porting solutions, end to end application development and Ant based build system. It has an open platform and highly customizable which makes it a great thing for both new and experienced to Java ME.

As per Laurie Tolson, V.P., Java Developer Platforms Group, Sun Microsystems:

Community involvement is key to the strength of the NetBeans platform. We are experiencing continued excitement for some of the industry's most innovative mobile developer products. We believe by open- sourcing the code, it will attract even more developers to embrace the platform; thus strengthening the community.
