Sun has moved further towards its initiative for open sourcing Java as it has released a fully buildable java development kitlinks for Java SE to the OpenJDK community. It's an important part of the Java Platform Standard Edition comprising of Sun's virtual machine, JavaHelp and javac compiler. Being licensed under the GPLv2 it will offer access to source code and application server code. The company has even said that the Java SE 6 Technical Compatibility Kit could be used for establishing compatibility with Java SE 6 specification.

Certain parts of code related to 2D graphics effects have not been released under open source since the company has no rights to the technology but it feels that open source developers would go ahead and rewrite the restricted components. Open source initiative had started way back in November and hopefully it is progressing in a smooth manner.
