Filed in archive Application Development on November 7, 2006
Sun Microsystems sticks to its gun for open sourcing Java and the company is now revealing more details as to how it is planning to open source its core technology. Within this month the company has plans of making available java platform Micro Edition and Java Platform Standard Edition freely.
The Project GlassFish is already underway since 2005. Three main components would be open sourced by Sun. In the case of Java ME, Connected Device Configuration, Connected Limited Device Configuration and Mobile Information Device Profile 2.1 would be open sourced whereas in the case of Java SE, JavaHelp, Java HotSpot virtual machine and Java Compiler would be outsourced.
With open sourcing of Java, seventy percent of the software portfolio would be made available freely and the company is working towards open sourcing the entire software within the next twelve months. Certainly with this effort more developers would be encouraged to experiment with Sun's technologies.
