Skype this week announced the launch of a 'lite' version of its software, a thin client designed for Android devices and a wide range of Java-enabled mobile phones, including handsets from LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.
"Skype Lite is truly that: a back-to-basics build that allows the customary cut-rate international calling to Skype contacts, and also calling credits to non-Skype buddies using the SkypeOut service," writes CNET's Jessica Dolcourt. "You'll be able to IM other Skype friends in addition - an activity best done with a data plan. "
"The service may be useful for mobile users who make international calls often, as Skype's prices are often less than what a wireless carrier charges," writes InformationWeek's Marin Perez. "The cost will be deducted from a user's Skype Credit account, but Skype-to-Skype calls won't cost anything besides the local airtime minutes."
