Sun and Red Hat come together on Java front

Filed in archive Business by gautam on November 6, 2007

Can you believe this? They used to share this love hate kind of relationship but ultimately gave in and now have come together for the better. If you have sensed it then I am talking about Red Hat and Sun Microsystems where the former has entered into an OpenJDK Community agreement which is expected to give it access to the Sun compatibility kit. Earlier Red Hat was into criticism mode pointing fingers at Sun for its semi proprietary Java ways.

Here is a quote of Sacha Labourey, CTO, JBoss on this new found bonding:

Red Hat fully supports Sun's courageous decision to open source Java Technologylinks. After more than 10 years of continuous leadership, the Java technology ecosystem will enter an era of accelerated innovation and benefit from extreme pervasiveness on a wide range of environments.

This is an example of how competitor could continue to pitch against each other while working together on baseline technologies. Is this the sign of further collaboration between these two? Hopefully time will be the witness to it!!
