Sun has realized that online gaming is a very big market with immense opportunities for people jumping in the gaming arena. A few days back Motorola announced its MOTODEV Game Developer Challenge, a mobile gaming challenge to let developers think out of the box and now Sun has announced a new open source developer platform for servers aimed at helping multiplayer Online game developers to launch their creations faster than anticipated.

Like other projects of Sun this project too carries a unique name and is called as Project Darkstar which would let developers come up with a range of games that could be accessed through a single server framework. Words are making rounds that Darkstar will be playing an important role in the bustling online gaming arena.

One more thing, besides releasing Darkstar Sun would also be releasing Darkstar Playground so that approved developers would be able to access Sun's server resources for starting their gaming initiative. This May Project Darkstar is expected to go live and you can sign up for it as of now.

Online gaming developers will certainly benefit from open source Darkstar and will tackle the problems associated with building enterprise grade server solutions. This highlights the seriousness of commitment of Sun to open sourcing from which it used to stay away and it is expected that few months down the lane Darkstar would be available under the GPL license. Hmm the whole game of gaming is getting serious now.
