Sun Microsystems has embraced GPL v2 for its open source initiative and now it will be releasing NetBeans under this license with Classpath Exception. This implies a number of benefits for the users. The open source umbrella will offer a number of options under it and the classpath exception is expected to bring it at par with JDK and and ensure better compatibility with other Java products.

Those not interested in GPL still have the option of using it under CDDL since the company has introduced it under a dual licensing policy. The purpose of using GPL v2 license is being seen as a means of improving compatibility with Linux and the classpath exception is expected to bring consistency in product portfolios and bundle. The dual license policy will surely benefit the community and the developers will indeed welcome it.
