Sun gives a peek at technologies of the future

Sun Labs revealed the various projects that it is working on ranging from wire free chip to chip communications to Web 2.0 security. It even featured technologies which were still in the development stage. In one of the rooms you could even see a slot car track embedded with real time Java sensor technology. One of the projects generating a lot of interest was Proximity Communication which if clicks could overcome the limitations of Moore's Law. This project has been in the development stage since quite some time and if success is achieved then bandwidth could be increased and replaced with smaller chips. It's still not sure as to when this project would see the light of the day.

Another project worth mentioning is Project Squawk which is aimed at developing a small Java virtual machine. With this Java would reach microcontroller powered devices. The good thing is that they have plans to offer it through open source.

There were other worth mentioning projects too which were demonstrated and let's go through the list below:

* Fortress, a high-performance computing language intended as a FORTRAN replacement
* DReaM, which is Sun's digital rights management initiative
* SPOTs (Small Programmable Object Technology), providing Java-programmable wireless sensors
* Celeste, presenting a new model for massively scalable storage
* Project Pulsar, which ports the embedded OpenSolaris OS to the PowerPC platform
* MPK20, providing a Sun virtual workplace and featuring collaboration and 3D capabilities. It is more of a gaming environment, Sproull said.
* Project Live, for system virtualization
* Sedna, presenting a next-generation switch

This all certainly highlights the strength of Sun and how it plans to change the world of technology.
