Sun Microsystems announced 1,300 job cuts this week, hitting the Java community hard.
"Sun's decision to dump 1,300 people was expected," notes ZDNet's Dana Blankenhorn. "Less expected was where they came from: open source. Included are people who worked on OpenJDK, Desktop Java, the Java 2 Standard Edition (Java SE) interface, and OpenSolaris. The key question for open source is where these people will go..."
"If something so core to the language as Java SE and the much heralded OpenJDK can have resources cut or removed entirely, then what could possibly be safe?" asks JavaWorld's Josh Fruhlinger.
