Is this a threat to Java and .NET? Eclipse is looking forward to get on the run time arena with an open source component model which would run across multiple operating systems and computing tiers. With its Eclipse Runtime project the organization is looking forward towards an open source technology based on equinox.

With it an effort is being made to bring together various run time project which includes Eclipse Communications, EclipseLink, Equinox, Riena, RAP and Swordfish into a single project and come up with a reliable open source run time and component model running across several operating systems. I am waiting to see how Sun and Microsoft will react to it.
