As per a benchmark test results published at http://www.spec.org/jAppServer2004/results/jAppSer ver2004.html, a popular application server benchmark which features a complete open source stack with MySQL 5.0 database, Sun Java™ Systems Application Server 9.0 Platform Edition (Project GlassFishSM) and MySQL 5.0 database has just kicked the competition by offering up to 8.6 lower cost of acquisition than the comparable solution.
The SPECjAppServer 2004 test has been recognized as an industry standard benchmark for measuring performance of Java EE application server platforms and each of the components which make up the application environment including database software, hardware, JVM software, JDBC drivers and system network.
The combination of MySQL and Sun achieved a result of 712.87 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard running a 64-bit version of MySQL 5.0 and SJSAS 9.0 on Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire X4100 servers powered by dual-core AMD Opteron processors. It has also achieved the best database performance. It also surpassed an Oracle powered result by more than thirty percent.
