Yahoo Photos Gets AJAX
Filed in archive AJAX on June 8, 2006
Yahoo photos has been around from the year 2K and up till now it has garnered around two billion photos and around thirty million monthly users. Even though it was an early player in the game but it was not quick enough to take advantage of Web 2.0 or Flickr's functionality. Now the new version has got in AJAX which gives it the feeling of a rich desktop client application which has slick drag and drop, organizational features such as automatically updating album based tags and in line text editing.
My friend Don Farber had a talk with Scott Schiller who worked on the new service regarding the challenges of giving browser based applications a desktop like feel. This is what he had to say:
We have to balance between the lightweight client and server, and understand the technical limits of what browsers will support. Javascript is still fairly new, so we have to do a lot of detective work-it takes both technology know-how and creative design.
